Solomon Islands man questioned for "threatening violence" against MP

CANBERRA, April 22 (Xinhua) -- A Solomon Islands man accused of threatening a newly elected MP was questioned by police Saturday as Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer arrived at the South Pacific nation's capital of Honiara and met with new Prime Minister Synder Rini.

Royal Solomon Islands Police Commissioner Shane Castles said the man was undergoing questioning for "threatening violence" against a newly elected parliamentarian from Malaita.

Rini Friday claimed one of his parliamentarians had been threatened to switch to the opposition camp.

The Solomon Islands opposition has lodged a motion of no confidence against Rini. It will be debated at the parliament next week.

Authorities are gearing up for a possible fresh outbreak of violence on Monday, when parliament resumes for the first time since Rini was elected as prime minister, according to Australian Associated Press (AAP).

Meanwhile, Downer met with Rini after arriving Honiara and discussed with the prime minister the recent rioting sparked by his election at a parliamentary vote last Tuesday.

Downer said he expressed Australia's support for the democratic processes of the Solomon Islands.

"We are also strongly in support of economic reform," Downer was quoted by AAP as saying.

Downer said they also discussed corruption while Rini said anyone who made claims about corruption should take them to the appropriate authorities to investigate. Enditem
