ZHUHAI, South China,
April 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese divers including "diving queen" Guo Jingjing
breezily bagged home three gold medals here on Saturday in the second day
competition at the fifth leg of FINA Diving Grand Prix.
Olympic and world champion Guo combined Li to take
the lead since their first dive and finished their excellent performances by
nailing an inward two-and-a-half somersault pike, earning 78.30 points the
highest score of the event on Saturday.
After claiming the gold at 337.80 points, Guo said,
"We are happy to win here. Having paired up for about a year, our
synchronization is quite satisfying."
Li grabbed a gold in the 10-metre platform
synchronized event with Lao Lishi at 2004 Athens Olympics but stepped down to
train on the springboard afterwards. Talking about her winning partner at last
year's World Aquatic Championships, Guo said, "she made huge progress on the
springboard and performed better and better."
Katja Dieckow/Nora Subschinski from Germany was
second at 288.60 points and Australian pair Sharleen Stratton/Briony Cole
finished third at 283.74 points.
In men's 3-metre springboard final, Xu Xiang and He
Chong made a one-two finish for China with 492.65 and 475.55 points
respectively.
Rising star He entered the final with 507.95 points,
the highest score in semi-finals. While leading the field of six finalists with
only one dive to go, He unexpectedly blew his trumpcard -- a forward
two-and-a-half somersault and three twist pike, earning 53.20 points and handing
in the title to teammate Xu.
"I have began to use this dive in competitions since
more than one year ago and this is the worst performance I have ever made while
executing it," He said.
Alexander Dobroskok from Russia finished third with a
total score of 465.60 points.
He had won a gold in men's 3-metre springboard
synchronized event on Friday, with his world champion winning partner Wang Feng.
With only five pair of competitors in the women's 10
metre platform synchronized event, Chinese hopefuls Jia Tong/Chen Ruolin and
Jiang Lishuang/Yuan Peilin were unchallenged in the total five rounds.
Finally, Jia/Chen was atop of the podium with 338.76
points followed by Jiang/Yuan at 329.58 points. However, the second finishers
had to give the silver to Hong In Sun/Choe Kum Hui from DPRK, as only one pair
of the home team could be awarded points in the Grand Prix rankings. Hong In
Sun/Choe Kum Hui's total score was 297.24 points.
Canadian pair Rachel Elena Kemp/Roseline Filion
finished third at 287.37 points. Enditem
