SEOUL, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Republic of Korea (ROK)
and Japanese diplomats failed in achieving solution to the ongoing territorial
dispute after a two-day negotiation in Seoul, ROK Foreign Ministry spokesman Bae
Young-han told reporters Saturday.
"The talks broke down in the end," the spokesman said.
ROK Foreign Ministry was expected to officially
announce the result of the negotiations later.
The two-day tough negotiation tried to find a
diplomatic solution to the territorial dispute amid escalating tensions between
the two states.
The breakdown of the negotiation adds worries over a
possible military clash between the two neighbors as Japanese media, citing
Japanese government sources, said earlier that Japan would press ahead with the
survey in disputed waters if the talks failed.
ROK's YTN TV reported after the breakdown of negation
that more than 20 ROK armed Coast Guard vessels had been deployed to the waters
around the Dokdo islets while air force had tightened patrol over the disputed
area.
Japan announced on April 14 a plan to conduct
maritime survey in waters near the disputed islets in the East Sea (Sea of
Japan),which was called "Dokdo" in ROK and "Takeshima" in Japan. Both countries
claim sovereignty to the ROK-controlled islets.
ROK insists that the waters near Dokdo islets are
part of ROK's exclusive economic zone and Japan has no rights to conduct such a
survey without Seoul's approval.
Two survey ships of Japan's Coast Guard left for the
waters near the Dokdo islets on Wednesday.
Japan's Kyodo News said Saturday the two Japanese
survey ships remained on standby in the Sea of Japan and were waiting for
orders. Enditem |
