Mubarak invites Israeli Acting PM for official visit
www.chinaview.cn 2006-04-22 04:10:55

CAIRO, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has invited Israeli Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to Egypt for an official visit, the official MENA news agency reported on Friday.

MENA reported that Olmert's office said that the visit's date was to be set next week.

Mubarak extended the invitation in a telephone call to Olmert and wished him luck in forming his coalition government, the report added.

It will be the first meeting between Israeli and Egyptian leaders since February 2005, when former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon attended a meeting in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharmel-Sheikh to discuss a de facto ceasefire deal between Israel and the Palestinians, which Mubarak also participated.

On April 6, an Israeli government official announced that Mubarak and Olmert had agreed to meet once the new Israel cabinet was formed.

Egypt and Jordan are the only two Arab states to have signed peace treaties with Israel.

Olmert, whose centrist Kadima party won the most seats in the March general elections, is engaged in the formation of a new coalition government. Enditem
