Solomon Islands new PM says he won't quit

    CANBERRA, April 21 (Xinhua) -- The Solomon Islands new Prime Minister Snyder Rini said on Friday that he would not quit, while the opposition filed a motion to sack him, according to local media reports.

    CANBERRA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer on Thursday declined to give a timetable of withdrawal of Australian troops from the Solomon Islands, and also left open the option of sending troops to the region.

The situation in the riot-torn South Pacific state of the Solomon Islands is better due to "sobering effect" brought by the presence of additional Australian troops there, according to Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Thursday.

    CANBERRA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- The Pacific Islands Forum on Thursday called upon Solomon Islanders to renew their commitment to peace in the wake of violent riots in the South Pacific nation's capital Honiara following Tuesday's parliamentary vote which elected a new prime minister.

Australia to send more troops to Solomon Islands

    CANBERRA, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister John Howard on Wednesday announced that Australia will send 110 soldiers and 70 policemen to the South Pacific country of Solomon Islands, following violent riots in the capital over Tuesday's parliamentary vote which elected a new prime minister.
