JAKARTA, April 20 (Xinhua) -- A powerful quake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia's tsunami-ravaged province of Aceh early Thursday, but there was no report of casualties.
The tremor, occurred at 3:37 a.m. local time (20:37 GMT Wednesday), was felt particularly strong on Simeulue island and its vicinity in Aceh province, local meteorological and geophysical agency head Syahnan was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.
The quake's epicenter was located 33 km beneath sea level, he said.
Syahnan said another quake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale also rattled the island about 56 minutes earlier.
Aceh, located on the northern tip of Sumatra island, was the worst hit by the tsunami which followed a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra, with death toll reaching more than 130,000.
The December 2004 tsunami claimed the lives of over 230,000 people in Asian countries. Enditem |
