BEIJING, April 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Samsung Electronics Wednesday
announced that it has developed a 2 GB MultiMediaCard (MMCmicro card) for
use in mobile phones.
The card is about the size of a postage stamp
(12mmx14mmx1.1mm), and combines four 4Gbit NAND flash devices. According to
Samsung, the card can store 12 hours of mobile video and is fast enough to
download three hours of it in under two minutes. An adapter allows the card to
be plugged into any multimedia card slot. The card can read at 10MB per second
and write at 7MB per second.
Availability and pricing of the card have not been
announced; however, Samsung said that it will be shipping a 1 GB MMCmicro card,
which was announced about three months ago, "later this year."
Some U.S. Retail sources said that they would expect the
pricing of the card to come in at "less than 50 dollars."
Samsung cited research by Dataquest, a semiconductor
market research firm that said that between 2005 and 2010, the multimedia card
market will grow 17 percent and the MMCmicro market by 95 percent. Enditem
