Israeli court to approve separation fence around Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Israeli High Court of Justice will approve to complete the construction of the separation fence surrounding Jerusalem, local Ha'aretz daily reported on Wednesday.

The decision came after the court rejected on Tuesday evening a petition by Palestinian residents for injunctions against the construction of the fence surrounding northern Jerusalem.

The court move effectively permitted the completion of the northern route of the separation barrier, adjacent to Palestinian towns of Bir Naballah, Beit Hanina, Al Jib, Judeira and Kalandiya, north of Jerusalem.

Justices Aharon Barak, Miriam Naor and Esther Hauyt ruled that since Palestinians would no longer be restricted in their travel in the area, the separation fence is allowed to be completed.

Roads have been built in the area for Palestinians to travel without entering the municipal area of Jerusalem, and a new checkpoint between the northern and southern parts of the West Bank has also been made available for Palestinian residents, said the report.

Meanwhile, the court was notified that the new arrangements provide a sufficient alternative to the routes that cross the fence's outline.

The court is also expected to rule in several days on another fence section near the Dahiyat al Barid intersection.Israel began to construct the separation fence in 2002 as a means to stop suicide bombing attacks.

The Palestinians view the barrier is a land grab, denying them a viable state they desire in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The fence, which zigzags in and around the West Bank, will be over 600 km long when completed some time this year or next year.Enditem
