MOSCOW, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Moscow calls on the Palestinian government to stop and prevent anti-Israeli actions, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said here on Monday, following a suicide bomb attack in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.

"All branches of government in the Palestinian Authority shouldexert maximum effort to stop anti-Israeli actions, primarily terrorist acts," Mikhail Kamynin was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying.

"We call on the government of Israel to show restraint and composure despite these grave circumstances and to prevent (the situation) from sliding into the abyss of broad confrontation," hesaid.

The suicide bombing in Tel Aviv killed at least eight people and wounded 40 others on Monday afternoon.

Hours after the bomb attack, Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), said that the Tel Aviv attack was part of the Palestinians' right of self-defense.

"Resisting Israeli aggression was rightful as long as it continues," said Hamas spokesman Abu Zuhri.

Russia urged Israel and Palestine to jointly build a barrier toterrorism in the region.

"We are convinced that joint efforts and an effective barrier to all terrorist sorties will make it possible to break the circleof violence and will lead to the resumption of talks on the basis of the Road Map," Kamynin said.

"Russia will continue energetic assistance to these efforts," he added.

It was believed as the first suicide attack in Israel since theHamas took over the Palestinian government on March 29.

The attack occurred hours before the swearing in of the new Israeli parliament following last month's election won by the centrist Kadima party of acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Enditem
