Backgrounder: Chronology of suicide bombings in Israel

    JERUSALEM, April 17 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and more than 40 others injured in a Palestinian suicide bomb attack near the old central bus station in southern Tel Aviv on Monday afternoon, police said.

    The following are major suicide bombings in Israel in the last year. Death tolls do not include the bombers.

    2005:

    Feb. 25 -- A suicide bomber kills at least four Israelis and wounds about 60 others outside the Stage nightclub in Tel Aviv. Islamic Jihad (Holy War) movement claims responsibility.

    July 12 -- An 18-year-old suicide bomber wearing a belt with 7-10 kg of explosives killed four Israeli women and wounded some 90 others at a shopping mall in the Israeli coastal city of Netanya. Saraya al-Quds, an armed wing of the radical Islamic Jihad, claimed responsibility.

    Aug. 28 -- A suicide bomber blows himself up near the central bus station of the southern Israeli city of Beersheba, wounding at least 10. No one claims responsibility.

    Oct. 26 -- A Palestinian blows himself up at an open-air market in the Israeli coastal city of Hadera, killing at least five people and wounding dozens more. Islamic Jihad said it was behind the explosion.

    Dec. 5 -- A suicide bomber blows himself up at the entrance to a shopping mall in Netanya, killing at least five Israelis and wounding dozens more. Islamic Jihad's Saray al-Quds claims responsibility.

    Dec. 29 -- A suicide bombing occurs between two Jewish settlements near the northern West Bank city of Tulkarm, seriously injuring two Israelis.

    2006:

    Jan. 19 -- A Palestinian suicide bomber blows himself up at a sandwich stand near Tel Aviv's old central bus station, wounding 20 people. Islamic Jihad said it carried out the attack.

    March 30 -- A suicide bombing at Kedumim settlement in the occupied West Bank kills at least three Israeli citizens. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, an armed wing of the Fatah movement, claimed responsibility.

    April 17 -- A suicide bomber kills at least six people at a Tel Aviv sandwich stand near the old central bus station. The Islamic Jihad and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack. Enditem
