Special Report: Tension accelerates in Iraq

BAGHDAD, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Two U.S. marines were killed and 22 others wounded in an insurgent attack on Thursday in Iraq's volatile Anbar province, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

Of the two, one marine, assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, was killed at the scene, while the other, assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5, died of fatal wounds at a medical facility, the military said in a statement.

Twenty-two marines were wounded in the attack and two of them sustained critical wounds, the statement said. The brief statement did not provide further details on the attack.

The latest deaths brought to over 2,360 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, according to figures released by the U.S. Department of Defense. Enditem
