United are now six points adrift of Chelsea, who visit Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, needing seven points from five games to winthe English Premiership title.

United were overwhelming favourites to pick up three points in their late bid to catch Chelsea in the title race but ran into a gritty Sunderland who are determined to go down fighting.

Ferguson's side dominated play and created countless chances but inspired goalkeeper Kelvin Davis managed to keep strikers Wayne Rooney and Ruud Van Nistelrooy at bay.

But the draw was useless for Sunderland, who are rooted to the bottom with 12 points from 33 games. Enditem
