Gaudio, Safin set up quarterfinal clash at Valencia tennis

    MADRID, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Argentine player Gaston Gaudio made the quarterfinals after easing through Germany's Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-2 at the Valencia tennis international Open on Thursday.

    The second seed will face unseeded Marat Safin of Russia, who toppled Boris Pashanski of Serbia-Montenegro 6-2, 6-2.

    The Russian won 88 percent of the points with his first serve and broke his opponent four times to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time this year.

    Sixth-seeded Filippo Volandri of Italy defeated Tomas Zib of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4 to reach the last eight for the fourth time this year. The Italian will play Nicolas Almagro of Spain.

    Almagro, who won three qualifying matches before reaching the main draw, beat Bjorn Phau of Germany 6-2, 6-1. He beat fourth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero in the first round. Enditem
