BRUSSELS, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The football match-rigging scandal in
Belgium hit the headlines again on Thursday as the Belgian prosecution issued
more indictments, including those of a former trainer and three former first
division players.
Brussels examining judge Sylviana Verstreken has confirmed that nine former
and current players with first division Lierse have become official suspects in
the investigation into match fixing inBelgian football. But the judicial
authorities have refused to reveal the names of the people.
However, newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reported that the latest wave of indictments
involve former trainer of La Louviere Gilbert Bodart and three Lierse
players, Marius Mitu, Laurent Fassotte and Cliff Mardulier.
Ex-La Louviere coach Gilbert Bodart previously claimed that he rigged a
match to save his wife and children from "taking a bulletin the head".
Four more Lierse players, plus trainers Patrick Deman and Paul Put, are likely
to be charged in the next few days, the Flemish-language daily said. The trainers
are suspected of passive corruption.
According to a La Louviere spokesman, no player at the club was
charged. However, President Paul Gaone, the club's lawyer Laurent Denis and
players' agent Pietro Allatta have already been charged.
It is alleged that a gambling mafia linked to a Chinese businessman has paid
players and trainers to influence the outcome of various matches. Police
have identified more than 50 suspects.
The businessman, Ye Zheyun, is wanted on an international arrest warrant
but his whereabouts is unknown.
Any court case is not expected to start until the autumn. Enditem
