PARIS, April 10 (Xinhua) -- French President Jacques Chirac announced on Monday that the controversial youth job law that has triggered strong protests and strikes across the country would be "replaced" by a series of new employment measures.

In a statement, the presidency said "The president of the republic has decided to replace Article 8 of the law on equal opportunities with measures in favor of the professional insertion of young people in difficulty."

The announcement was made after a meeting with Prime Minister Dominuque de Villepin and other senior officials.

The primer minister is expected to announce details of the new measures shortly. Enditem
