Opponents said to end all rallies if Thaksin resigns

BANGKOK, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The People's Alliance for Democracy, an anti-Thaksin group, announced on Tuesday after a core members meeting that if caretaker Prime Minister resigns, they will end all demonstration activities.

All five core leaders announced the latest move after an emergent meeting of the alliance. The announcement said they will finish all the planned demonstration activities as soon as Thaksin's resignation.

It seems like a response to Thaksin's Monday remarks. The caretaker Prime Minister of Thailand, said during a TV program Monday night after his Thai Rak Thai Party got a 60-percent of allvotes cast on last Sunday's election that he will glad to leave if his resignation can bring unity and peace to the country.

"The people have decided. Whether I stay or go, there must be reasons. And if it's good for the country, I'd immediately resign," he said during an interview by Channel 11.

"Tell me how the country would be better off without me [as prime minister]," Thaksin said. "There must be good reasons for me to stay or quit. The 16 million [who voted for Thai Rak Thai] should be told how the country will be reconciled if I step down."

Anyway, the People's Alliance for Democracy said on Tuesday that if Thaksin insists his post, the rallies will go on unceasingly as the nearest one has been set on April 7 in Bangkok.

The national radio channel said that core leaders of the People' s Alliance for Democracy prepared two letters which one is for media to make public and another "secret letter" for Thaksin himself.   Enditem
