OTTAWA, April 2 (Xinhua) -- One man was killed in a can of gasoline explosion that rocked a coffee shop in downtown Toronto Sunday afternoon, police said.

The blast occurred just after 1 p.m. local time in the washroom of an outlet of Tim Hortons, the biggest Canadian snack chain shop. The victim suffered burns to his body. There were no other injuries.

An unidentified man went into the shop's washroom carrying a gasoline container. A few moments later the blast occurred, Toronto Police Staff Sgt. Don Cole told reporters.

It is unknown what ignited the gasoline or what the deceased man 's motives were. But police are sure he was not a terrorist and is focusing suspicion on either suicide or arson, Cole said.

"He's not a strap-on al-Qaida bomber guy. It sounds to me like a guy who either wanted to do a torch job or commit suicide," he said.

"The gas can caused an explosion and a fire. The ceiling came down, it was pretty messay," said Cole. The victim was not a member of the coffee shop's staff.

The accident caused a scene of panic within the restaurant with people screaming and running away. Police cordoned off approximately one city block and evacuated the area as a precaution.Employees of the shop were also evacuated after the blast.

Later Sunday, another Tim Hortons outlet in the city was locked down after a suspicious package was found inside the restaurant, just a few subway stations north of where the explosion occurred.

Police confirmed an emergency task force unit had been dispatched to the second location and the area around the shop had been evacuated. Enditem
