LONDON, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United's Norwegian striker Ole
Gunnar Solskjaer has signed a new two-year contract with the club.
The injury-plagued forward, 33, has been sidelined for the best part of
three seasons and is currently recovering from a broken cheekbone.
But a United statement said: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it
has reached agreement with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
"The deal will see Ole stay at the club until June 2008."
Manchester United have not made it clear publicly but it is felt the
contract was offered to Solskjaer on a pay-as-you-play basis.
Solskjaer is a hugely popular figure at the club following his goal that won
the 1999 European Cup for United and has battled his way back from two
serious knee injuries.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said on the club's website: "I am delighted that
Ole has signed a new two-year deal.
"It reflects our hope that he would return to full play after his recent
cheek injury.
"It will take Ole to 35 and gives him the opportunity to develop his
coaching experience. We also foresee him having a key role as an ambassador for
the club in the future."
Solskjaer made his comeback from a long-term knee problem as a substitute
in the draw at Birmingham in December and was captain for the FA Cup third-round
ties with Burton Albion in January.
But earlier this month he suffered a fractured cheekbone in a reserve game which
is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season.
In the wake of his most recent setback, chief executive David Gill
re-assured Solskjaer about his Old Trafford future.
Solskjaer, who has scored 116 goals for the club, arrived at United as an
unknown in 1996 and is eligible for a testimonial.
He added: "I have always felt at home here and I want to repay the loyalty
that has been shown to me by the club, the fans and Sir Alex.
"Although my priority is to keep playing I am looking forward to exploring
the coaching opportunity being given to me by the club." Enditem
