and Peru's National Human Rights Coordinator presented a petition
to the Chilean government on Thursday, calling for the extradition of former
Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori.
Zunilda Carvajal, the petition coordinator in Chile, said the document, with
the signatures of 20,000 individuals from Argentina, Spain, England and
Mexico, had been sent to Chile's justice department.
The petition was sent by relatives of those murdered in the Barrios Altons
and La Cantuta massacres, which are among the 12 cases related to human rights
violations or corruption for which Fujimori is sought for extradition, the
coordinator said.
"We are fighting against impunity because we believe in the need to awaken
international solidarity in the face of what we have had to live through," said
Gisella Ortiz, sister of Luiz Enrique Ortiz Perea, killed in the 1992 La Cantuta
massacre.
Fujimori, president of Peru from 1990 to 2000, has been jailed in Santiago
since November last year, and is awaiting a response to an extradition request
by Peru's government at the end of last year.
Fujimori is wanted by the Peruvian government on 21 separate criminal
charges, including involvement in the murder of 25 citizens, embezzlement of
public funds, and dereliction of duty. Enditem |
