S. Korean singer in plagiarism scandal
www.chinaview.cn 2006-03-28 08:07:25

BEIJING, March 28 -- Rising South Korean star Lee Hyo-lee, 26, is accused of plagiarizing a Britney Spears' song for her song "Get Ya" in her latest album.

Representatives of the writers of the Spears song ”°Do Something”± have written to the producers of the South Korean pop star, saying parts of the song are plagiarized. This is the first time the copyright holder has formally complained about plagiarism in South Korea.

The singer canceled an appearance in a TV show Sunday, which was interpreted as a move to avoid a public confrontation over the scandal.

Universal Music Publishing Korea, which handles copyright of ”°Do Something”± in South Korea, said last week it sent a copy of ”°Get Ya”± to the composers of the Spears song and the company that manages the copyright two weeks ago. In response, three of the four composers agreed that the Lee song was ”°significantly influenced”± by their own work ”°and there are some parts that constitute plagiarism,”± Universal said.

Universal said it will meet with the songwriters behind ”°Get Ya”± to seek a settlement, but it did not rule out legal action.
