No putting off for election: Thai Election Commission
www.chinaview.cn 2006-03-27 21:31:49

BANGKOK, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The Election Commission (EC) of Thailand Monday rejected an appeal by senators, and reaffirmed that nationwide polling for the general election will proceed as planned on April 2.

EC chairman Wassana Puemlap said he would inform the Senate by letter that the date for the general election remains unchanged, and that "the Senate needs not worry about any crisis because there is no crisis yet".

The EC met Monday and decided that the poll must continue despite the political turmoil. Wassana said he believed the election would be trouble-free.

Embattled Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's Thai Rak Thai party is the only major party fielding candidates, while other major political parties in the opposition have boycotted the election. Enditem
