China imposes consumption tax on disposable and luxury items

BEIJING, March 27(Xinhua)-- China announced on March 21 its plan to impose a consumption tax on disposable wooden chopsticks, wooden floor panels, yachts, luxury watches and more oil based products as of April 1 of this year.

The Ministry of Finance said the plan has been approved by the Chinese Government and was designed to control and regulate energy consumption, help protect the environment by reducing consumption of timber resources, and narrow the gap between the poor and the rich by collecting a consumption tax on the luxury items. >>>full story

The consumption tax plan has received warm responses from netizens at major Chinese websites.

Following are but a few excerpts of the netizens' comments posted on online forum:

-- We welcome the move! I hope to see further improvements in the taxation of cosmetic products.

-- It's a timely change, as we are upholding the concept of scientific development. I believe the tax adjustment is helpful to control the excessive consumption of resources, to narrow the gap between the poor and the rich, and to better protect the environment as well. กก

-- I suggest everybody should take a pair of chopsticks for his/her own use when eating out, which, I think, is healthful and environment-friendly.

-- It's a boost to the hard alcohol makers, because the new government policy will contribute to our business performance.

-- As for those who do buy high-ticket items, do you think those who can afford yachts and limousines will worry about paying the consumption tax? I don't think this tax reform will stop them buying whatever they afford to buy. Enditem
