Warsaw, March 24 (Xinhua) -- The Polish foreign ministry has summoned
Belarussian ambassador Pavel Latushka in connection with the detention of Polish
citizens in Minsk Thursday night when a opposition gathering on the city's main
square was dispersed by the Belarussian police.
Ministry Spokesman Pawel Dobrowolski told the Polish Press Agency on Friday that
the ministry demanded information on reasons and circumstances of the affair
intolerable in bilateral relations, and protested against the use of force
against Polish citizens.
Dobrowolski said Poland demands Belarussian authorities inform in an
official statement about the fate of Polish citizens detained last night and the
exact number of Poles arrested and their personal data.
The Polish consul in Minsk managed to identify two of the detained Poles
who are a former Polish ambassador to Belarus, Mariusz Maszkiewicz, and a
journalist from the daily Gazeta Wyborcza. Polish embassy members in Minsk will
meet local officials to establish what befell the missing Poles. Enditem
