BEIJING, March 24 -- "Failure to Launch" is zooming high at the box office. And with its wacky premise and lovable cast, it doesn't look like the film will be leaving the stratosphere anytime soon.
"Failure to Launch" is a romantic comedy about a 35-year-old man, played by Mathew McConaughey, who just won't leave home. Feeling the urge to push him out into the world, the man's parents hire Paula, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, a relationship expert who, for the right price, will woo and encourage her targets to embrace life on their own.
But the trouble is, Paula starts to fall in love with Trip at about the same time he catches onto the hoax.
Sarah Jessica Parker said:"I just thought it was a humorous idea because it was and is a growing phenomenon. And I think there were lots of pieces, large pieces that seemed very interesting to me - Matthew obviously, Matthew McConaughey. You know a big Paramount movie -- they don't make a lot of big romantic comedies anymore and I thought it seemed like a clever funny idea."
McConaughey left the family home shortly after finishing high school. The actor says he can see the benefits of his character's situation.
He said:"I laughed when I read it -- and that's a big factor when you just read it and you laugh and it's not one of these things you over think, you know? You read it and you go, you know I thought that was damn funny. Um, also a way to get a guy like this, who I didn't want to play him like a slacker who is just schlepping off the parents. I didn't want to play him like...no this is a guy who has it figured out. This is a guy who...man...rent is paid, food is great, mom folds the clothes. What's not to like? You know?"
"Failure to Launch" grossed 24 million dollars at the US box office in its first week of release.
