UNITED NATIONS, March 23 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Economic and Social Council adopted a resolution Wednesday night to abolish the Geneva-based Commission on Human Rights on June 19,which will be replaced by the Human Rights Council.

The resolution was passed without a vote by the Economic and Social Council, under which the rights commission is a subsidiary body, established in February 1946.

The resolution requested the commission "to conclude its work at its 62nd session, which should be short and procedural, and to transmit its final report to the council."

The Economic and Social Council took the decision after the General Assembly voted last week to establish the 47-nation Human Rights Council. The assembly recommended the rights commission be abolished. Enditem
