CANBERRA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Category five cyclone Larry hit the far north coast of Australia's state of Queensland Monday morning before it was downgraded to a category three storm later in the day.

Meteorologists have said it is one of the biggest tropical cyclone ever seen.

Weather forecaster Cathy Muller said the cyclone, which was a maximum category five system when it hit the coastal town of Innisfail early Monday, was downgraded before noon.

Larry was then about 65 km south-west of Mareeba, inland from the famous tourist resort of Cairns, she was quoted by Australian Associated Press as saying.

Muller said Larry was expected to continue moving west at 25 to 30 kph.

A flood warning is current for coastal rivers and streams between the coastal towns of Innisfail and Townsville.

The cyclone has left a trail of destruction in Innisfail, with reports of houses and crops destroyed.

Meanwhile, Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said there will be a national appeal to help victims of the cyclone.

He said the appeal will raise money to support people who have lost property.

Prime Minister John Howard has also said the federal governmentwill do all it can to help. Enditem
