Nyonyi, McCann highlight in Super Sunday marathon

    MELBOURNE, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Samson Ramadhani Nyonyi of Tanzania and Australian Kerryn McCann won the men's and women's marathon titles respectively to highlight the Super Sunday action at the Commonwealth Games here.

    Ramadhani Nyonyi ran fastest in a time of two hours 11 minutes and 29 seconds while McCann won her second consecutive Commonwealth gold medal by 2:30.53.

    People were packed to watch the marathon races around the city of Melbourne as the organizers predicted it the busiest traffic and transportation weekend in the history.

    The Tanzanian took advantage of a mid-race mishap to take gold from Kenyan Fred Mogaka Tumbo. Bronze went to England's Daniel Robinson who was three minutes behind Ramadhani Nyonyi.

    Greeted by a packed house and a standing ovation at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), McCann celebrated her victory witha lap around the MCG with her son.

    McCann led throughout the race, only being headed once at the 10 kilometre mark.

    Sunette Viljoen of South Africa beat defending champion LaverneEve of the Bahamas to win the women's javelin gold medal by 60.54 meters.

    Eve was 18cm short of the Viljoen's mark while the bronze medalwent to Jamaican Olivia McKoy with a throw of 57.04 meters.

    Australian Lisbeth Lenton's ambition to pocket double gold medal came short as world champion compatriot Jessicah Schipper held onto a 57.48-second winning time in the women's 100m butterfly.

    Lenton, who won the 100m freestyle, finished second with 0.32 seconds back.

    Simon Burnett of England made up for his silver medal finish inthe 200m freestyle as he won the title in the men's 100m freestyle,timing 48.57.

    Scotland's David Carry, winner of the men's 400m freestyle, took the 400m individual medley with a time of 4:15.98, while England's Rebecca Cooke winning the women's 800m freestyle by 8:29.50.

    Australia tops the medal table after five days with 28 gold, 22silver and 21 bronze medals, with England trails on second with 13,13 and 11. Enditem
