NEW YORK, March 18 (Xinhua) -- The Port Authority, owner of the World Trade
Center site, rejected on Saturday developer Larry Silverstein's latest proposal
for moving forward with rebuilding the WTC site.
Silverstein made the offer Friday. According to some media reports, he
agreed to several Port Authority demands, including that he give up rebuilding
rights to a portion of the site, and divide insurance money accordingly.
But the Port Authority argued that many parts of Silverstein's offer are
unacceptable, and it is working on a counter-offer of its own.
The two sides have been deadlocked over which towers each should build, and
how to split the costs.
Silverstein said a deal could be reached quickly if the two sides would sit
down one more time.
Talks between the two sides broke down last Tuesday night. The Port
Authority and New York Governor George Pataki blame Silverstein for the
breakdown, criticizing him for being greedy.
But Silverstein said it was the Authority that broke off the talks. He had asked Governor Pataki to intervene to restart the talks. Enditem |
