BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhuanet) -- China's leading newspaper People's Daily carried a commentary on Saturday, saying the thorough implementation of the "socialist concept of honor and disgrace" as described by Chinese President Hu Jintao is a significant and pressing task for the country.
People should grasp the essence of the concept and learn how to tell right from wrong, good from evil, beauty from ugliness, and to apply it to their daily work, the commentary said.
Hu Jintao, also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, raised the concept when he was meeting with members of the Tenth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's political advisory body, on March 4.
The concept, which underscores the value of patriotism, hardwork and plain living, belief in science, consciousness of serving the people, solidarity, honesty and credibility, and observation of the law, aims to refresh China's values by amalgamating traditional Chinese values with modern virtues.
