ANKARA, March 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Country Director for Turkey of the World Bank Andrew Vorkink said on Friday that Turkey should upgrade its level of education which would benefit the country's entry talks with the European Union (EU).
Vorkink made the comments when speaking at a conference named "Turkish Education Sector," an event co-sponsored by the World Bank and Turkish State Planning Organization in Ankara. He said that if the Turkish government succeeded in educational reform, it would contribute to socio-economic development and Turkey's EU entry bid.
Vorkink said that despite great successes achieved by Turkey in the education sector in the last 10 years, there was still room for improvement.
The Turkish people expected to have more job opportunities and better education, said the World Bank official, adding that an improvement in education would contribute to easing unemployment.
Turkey started talks with the EU over its entry into the pan-Europe bloc last October.
The negotiations are expected to last at least a decade and Turkey is required to carry out reforms in various fields, including in the education sector, in order to meet EU demands. Enditem |
