WELLINGTON, March 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Five conservation workers were rescued by a helicopter Friday evening after a volcano blew up in a remote New Zealand island.
But the rescue staff could not find any trace of the sixth one, who lost during the Friday morning eruption.
Six workers of the Department of Conservation (DOC) had been in Raoul Island, 700 kilometers north of Auckland, checking the temperature of a lake when the volcano erupted, the first time over 40 years.
Two DOC workers went searching for their lost colleague but couldn't get through the ash and fallen trees. The helicopter carried out a brief search of the remote island for the sixth worker. It is expected back at Ardmore Airport in Auckland sometime after midnight.
DOC said it will then assess a fresh search for the missing worker. Enditem |
