NAIROBI, March 17 (Xinhuanet) -- A regional soccer tournament scheduled for next month in Sudan has been moved to Tanzania due to transport constraints, soccer officials confirmed here on Friday.
The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Secretary General Nicholas Musonye said the difficulties that participating teams face in traveling to Sudan was responsible for the change in venue.
"Traveling to Sudan is very difficult and most teams do not have money to spend on air tickets. That's why we decided to bringthe tournament to Tanzania," Musonye said by telephone.
He said the regional soccer body was satisfied with the effortsbeing put in place by the Tanzania Football Federation to host thetourney.
Musonye said a record 14 clubs have confirmed participation in this year's CECAFA Kagame Club Cup tournament.
The event is being sponsored by Rwandan President Paula Kagame, who has boosted the competition with 60,000 US dollars in prize money.
Musonye said the clubs would be divided into three groups with the tournament being played in Dar-es-Salaam and Morogoro towns.
Tanzania, which hosted last year's tournament in Mwanza, has been given the privilege of fielding three teams instead of the usual two.
