JAKARTA, March 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Two earthquakes respectively measuring 4.5
and 3.5 on the Richter Scale rocked Buru Island in Indonesia's Maluku province
on Wednesday and Thursday morning, a spokesman of the Ambon Geophysics Station,
Benny Sipolo said Thursday.
The epicenter of the quakes had been traced at 03.7 southern latitude and
127.2 eastern longitude, around 138 km southwest of Ambon, or north of Namlea,
capital of Buru district.
The tremors were felt by residents of Ambon and Serang Bagian Barat (SBB) at
the fourth and fifth level of the Modified Marcelli Intensity (MMI), while in
Namlea it was above the fifth level of MMI.
The quakes were most likely followed by a minor tsunami, Benny Sipolo was
quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
At least 117 houses on Buru Island were damaged, according to an official
of Buru, Hasrui Soamole.
The damaged houses were located in Batu Jungku village (57 houses),
Waimorat (30), and Wailawa (25), while in Waimole village16 houses were
seriously damaged.
"We have also received information that two persons were killed,one went
missing and another was seriously injured in the quakes. On Tuesday (March 14) a
quake killed one woman," Soamole said.
Meanwhile, Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu is reported tohave left for Buru Island aboard the "MV Pamahanu Nusa" to visit the villages hit by the temblors. Enditem |
