Thaksin hints at temporary break in politics after election

BANGKOK, March 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Thailand's caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra hinted he would decide on a temporary break in politics after the snap election, the Thai News Agency said Thursday.

Speaking on concerns by Statesman and Privy Council President Gen Prem Tinsulanonda over the country's political turmoil, Thaksin said late Wednesday that it is a duty for all parties to help ease the situation.

More importantly, they must respect and comply with the existing constitutional rule, he said.

It is unjustified if people who abide by the rule must always bow to the demand by those who do not respect the rule. In this scenario, the country would be in turmoil, said Thaksin.

On the call by the statesman for all parties to make one step back, Thaksin said he had already made many steps back and reiterated his intention to amend the Constitution after the election as promised earlier.

Asked whether he would make a temporary break in politics once the Constitution is amended, he said, "Don't make a proposal like this. Should someone do want to raise the proposal, it should better be written in the Constitution that Thaksin is prohibited from entering politics."

However, he said, he wanted to wait and see the election result first in case he needed to make a decision on the temporary break in politics.

Thaksin assured foreign media that his government could manage the current situation and would adhere to the constitutional rule to keep the democratic system. Enditem
