WASHINGTON, March 15 (Xinhuanet) -- American Andy Roddick suffered a bitter 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 6-1 defeat to Russian Igor Andreev, packing up from the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters Wednesday.

Roddick, the third seed, became the first major victim here for the 26th-ranked Andreev, who had not won a match in the desert prior to this year.

The American, who lifted his last title five months ago in France, smashed a racket as he lost serve to love to drop to 5-1 in the final set. Andreev closed out his trip into the quarter-finals with a stinging backhand winner down the line against his frustrated opponent.

The 23-year-old American reached the semis a year ago when he lost to Lleyton Hewitt in three tiebreak sets. Andreev played a final in Sydney in January, losing to on-fire American James Blake.

Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus moved past Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-1. The battle of 20-year-olds was evenly matched on paper, with Berdych ranked 23rd and Baghdatis on25th.

Baghdatis is playing in only his second ATP event since losing to Roger Federer in the Australian Open final, a miracle run of form which launched his career into a new level.

In women's quarter-finals, the resurgent Martina Hingis claimed her 20th victory of this career-comeback season as she dominated Russian teenager Dinara Safina 6-3, 6-4.    Enditem
