YAOUNDE, March 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Chad has foiled a coup attempt against President Idriss Deby and arrested two plotters, senior officials told Radio France International on Wednesday.

"It was an attempted coup which happened at four o'clock this morning," said Information Minister Hourmadji Moussa Doumgor, adding that two senior officers had been caught and other plotters had fled.

President Deby, attending a six-nation summit of the Central African Economic and Moentary Community (CEMAC) in Equatorial Guinea when the coup were carried out, flew home after knowing the incident.

At the end of last week Deby cashiered two generals, Aguid and Issaka Diar, who deserted on February 17 when they were on a mission to negotiate a surrender by the army deserters turned rebels.

Two of the president's nephews who were responsible for the country's oil program also have joined the rebellion.

Deby first came to power in 1990 after launching a coup from bases in Darfur. Enditem
