NEW YORK, March 12 (Xinhuanet) -- New York Fire officials are trying on Sunday to determine the cause of a huge bush fire on Staten Island that damaged part of Great Kills Park and threatened nearby homes.
The five-alarm fire tore through a wide swath of Staten Island's Great Kills Park Saturday evening, emitting enough smoke to be visible for miles.
More than 200 firefighters fought the flame for several hours before bringing it under control.
About two dozen homes were evacuated, and about 75 acres of bush were burned but there were no reports of any significant property damage.
"We had a very difficult fire," said FDNY Chief Sal Cassano, noting there are homes on one side, and a sewage treatment plant on the other. Also the dry weather helped fire spread rapidly, he said. Enditem
