Cecafa to make draws for regional championship

    KAMPALA, March 11 (Xinhuanet) -- The Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) will make the draws 2006 regional club championship on March 15 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania,an official said Saturday.

    Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General of Cecafa told Xinhua by phone from Nairobi that he will travel to the hosting nation Tanzania on Monday and make the draws on Wednesday ahead of championship that starts on April 22.

    "We want to make the draws early so that the teams can know this early and prepare better with their groupings in mind. We arealso finalizing on all other aspects like accommodation of the teams with the Tanzania Football Association," he said.

    The lucrative tournament to run from April 22 to May 6 is sponsored by the Rwanda President Paul Kagame.

    It will attract all the top clubs in the region with the winnerbagging US$30,000, the runner-up US$20,000 and the third US$10,000.

    This year's tournament will attract SC Villa and Police FC fromUganda, Simba, Young Africans, Moro United (Tanzania), Tusker FC (Kenya), APR (Rwanda), Police FC (Djibouti), St. George (Ethiopia),Red Sea (Eritrea), Athletico Sportive (Burundi), Police FC (Zanzibar), El-Hilal (Sudan) and a team from Somalia.

    Uganda's Sports Club Villa are the defending champions after beating Rwanda's APR last year in the final held in Mwanza, Tanzania. Enditem
