Sri Lanka Tamil party wants elections postponed in Tamil regions

COLOMBO, March 11 (Xinhuanet) -- A Tamil Tiger proxy political party has called for the postponement of the planned elections to appoint new local administrative councils in Sri Lanka.

    K. Shivajilingam, a legislator for the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), said Saturday that they had met President Mahinda Rajapakseto impress upon him the need to postpone the elections in the north and east provinces.

"The security situation in the north and east is not conducive to holding an election," Shivajilingam said.

He said Rajapakse had told them that a decision to postpone the elections is beyond his control as it is a matter for the Commissioner of Elections to decide.

Sri Lanka goes to polls on March 30 to elect representatives for some 330 local councils throughout the island for a four-year term.

The TNA with the support of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels are to contest the election.

Shivajilingam accused the government backed paramilitary groups of continued action to destabilize the security situation through killings and violence.

He said therefore the situation in the two provinces was much vulnerable.

The TNA legislator was echoing the sentiments of the LTTE rebels as regards the alleged paramilitary groups who they said should be disbanded by the government in the spirit of the Norwegian backed ceasefire agreement.

The government has denied any backing to paramilitaries as alleged by the Tigers. Enditem
