Thai opposition plans mass rally

BANGKOK, March 7 (Xinhuanet) -- Anti-Thaksin groups has called for a massive demonstration and a march to the Government House next Tuesday in an effort to oust the caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, local press reported Tuesday.

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), made up of a variety of anti-Thaksin organizations, has urged the demonstrators to gather at Sanam Luang on the evening of March 13 to prepare for the march next day, when the cabinet holds its regular meeting.

During the lead-up to the March 14 protest march, the PAD will hold activities at Sanam Luang from 4 p.m. to midnight everyday from Tuesday.

To support the march, the State Enterprise Relations Confederation, which combines over 40 state enterprise labor unions, will call an assembly on March 13 to pave the way for a massive work stoppage.

Meanwhile, Union leaders have agreed to stop collecting water and power fees for two months to vent anti-government sentiment.

The Network of Power and Water Supplies Protection called on workers of water and electricity agencies to hold a massive strike next week, which would delay collection of utility fees and bill-handling for March and April.

The group also asked state enterprise workers to take leave from work and participate in the anti-Thaksin rally at Sanam Luangin protest against the premier's failure to pay taxes on the sale of Shin Corp shares.

Security has been beefed up at the Government House for fear that it would be besieged by protesters during Tuesday's cabinet meeting.

In addition to Special Branch police officers, some 200 border patrol police from Kanchanaburi province and commandos from the Crime Suppression Division have been deployed at the Government House, Bangkok Post newspaper quoted a source from the Royal Thai Police Office as saying.

Another 200 officers are on stand-by at the Border Patrol Police headquarters in the Saphan Kwai area, while some 200 police commandos have been stationed at Lat Phrao. Enditem
