Anti-Thaksin groups resume demonstration

BANGKOK, March 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Anti-Thaksin groups led by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) have resumed their rally at Bangkok's Sanam Luang (Royal Square) since Monday afternoon to continue to press for the resignation of caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The demonstrators who dispersed for work Monday morning are returning to the mass rally venue to join the Dharmma Army led by Maj. Gen. Chamlong Srimuang, who has vowed not to leave Sanam Luang to press "every minute, every hour and everyday" until the caretaker premier agrees to step down.

The demonstration, the fourth of its kind since early February, began Sunday afternoon.

The demonstrators will, again, march to the Government House on Monday night. They moved to rally in front of the Government House Sunday night before returning to Sanam Luang amid tightened security measures of police forces.

Earlier Monday, Thaksin reiterated his willingness to meet with his arch critics, including leaders of the PAD, but stressed he would not bow to any group pressing for his resignation.

"If I bow to their demand (for resignation), the country's democracy and the people's power and decisions through general elections will become meaningless. It will also become a bad norm for the Thai politics in which protesters could oust any prime ministers they don't like whenever they want in the future. This will be detrimental to the Thai politics and the nation," Thaksin said.

"I must have a strong stance to uphold the country's proper democracy," he added. Enditem
