BAGHDAD, March 6 (Xinhuanet) -- Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said on Monday that he will call the new parliament into the first session on Sunday, March 12.
"We will call for holding the meeting on March 12th because it is the last day that the constitution allows us to hold the meeting of the new parliament," Talabani told reporters.
According to Iraqi constitution, the new parliament must hold its first meeting within four weeks after the election results were certified on Feb. 12, which made March 12 the last possible date.
The new parliament was elected on Dec. 15, 2005, but its inaugural session was delayed due to political disagreement over the formation of a new government.
Political parties in Iraq have been wrangling over who should lead the next government while the dominated Shiite alliance insisted to nominate incumbent Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari as the new premier.
Sunni, Kurdish and some secular politicians have been united against Jaafari's nomination.
Talabani's announcement started the process of a 60-day period during which the legislature must elect a new head of state a new prime minister who will head the next cabinet.
The United Iraqi Alliance, a Shiite coalition, remains the largest bloc in the new 275-member parliament with 130 seats. Enditem |
