US military in Iraq denies report about withdrawal
www.chinaview.cn 2006-03-05 20:33:09

BAGHDAD, March 5 (Xinhuanet) -- U.S. military in Iraq denied on Sunday that America and Britain are planning to pull out their troops by the spring of 2007, saying that there is no fixed timetable for withdrawal.

A spokesman for the U.S. military in Iraq said the news report on a withdrawal of forces within a set timetable is "completely false".

He reiterated previous statements by U.S. and British officials that foreign troops will be gradually pulled out of Iraq once the Iraqi security forces can handle the country's security issues.

On Sunday, The Sunday Telegraph in Britain quoted unnamed senior military sources as saying that the plan to withdraw the troops came as both Washington and London have decided that the presence of coalition forces in Iraq was fueling insurgency.

Britain's Sunday Mirror newspaper also reported on the planned military withdrawal, saying it would take place within 12 months. The United States has 135,000 troops stationed in Iraq. Most of the other 15,000 coalition troops are British. Enditem
