Anti-Thaksin rally calls for resignation
www.chinaview.cn 2006-03-05 22:01:34

BANGKOK, March 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Tens of thousands of Thais all over the country gathered at Bangkok's Sanam Luang (Royal Square) Sunday to call for the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

At least 60,000 anti-Thaksin demonstrators had gathered at Sanam Luang as of Sunday evening, with many of them vowing to stayuntil the prime minister steps down.

Thailand's influential Buddhist activist Chamlong Srimuang said his Dharma Army Foundation followers will not end the rally until Thaksin steps down by himself.

About 5,000 policemen are deployed around the square and other sensitive sites such as the Government House, Thaksin's private residence and the Constitution Monument, which is seen as the political center of Thailand.

A pro-Thaksin rally held Friday night at the same spot drew more than 300,000 people. Enditem
