Heavy snowfall causes casualties in S. Germany

BERLIN, March 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Heavy snowfall has caused more than 100 deaths and injuries in southern Germany, with roads closed, flights cancelled and more than 600 traffic accidents recorded during the weekend, reports reaching here said Sunday.

The snowfall, about 50 centimeters deep, has caused the coldest ending winter in the southern state of Bavaria in 20 years, bringing public transport except underground rail to a halt in the state capital city of Munich.

A report by the German news agency DPA said that four people were killed and 104 were injured in more than 634 weather-related accidents between Friday evening and Sunday morning in the southern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Munich airport was briefly closed to allow snow ploughs to clear the runway and many flights were cancelled or delayed at the airport.

Railway tracks near the town of Schaffhausen were blocked by snow and 80 passengers on train from Stuttgart to Italy's city of Milan had been trapped.

The DPA quoted the German weather service DWD as saying that the heavy snowfall was expected to continue until well into Sunday afternoon.

"Many drivers pent hours trapped in their vehicles, unable to move forward on the slippery roads. Helpers distributed blankets and warm drinks to motorists caught in one jam near the city of Wuerzburg," the report said. Enditem
