LUSAKA, March 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Stories of elephants invading people and destroying
their crops have been the order of day in most rural parts of Zambia for
years, but now they have found that chili good remedy for ending this,
reported Times of Zambia Saturday.
People in Central province are now adopting the chili cultivation as one of
their cash crops, the newspaper reported.
A community relations coordinator said they started to plant chili last September
and found the chili growing is a an effective barrier to elephants as
the beasts are scared of smell of the crop.
The other way to keep them away is boiling the chili, adding a bit of
cooking oil and soaking a rope in the solution for a day. The rope can then be
hanged around the field to ensure elephants never cross the field.
If the chili growing magic works, the crop would be
planted around all the national parks as a way of caging the massive wild
animals, said the report. Enditem |
