Allies needed in battle of commercial bribery
www.chinaview.cn 2006-03-04 09:26:49

BEIJING, March. 4 -- By singling out commercial bribery as a main target, policy makers have tugged on one of the main roots of corruption among government officials.

Repeated anti-bribery warnings and promised joint action by key central departments all bear full testimony to the Chinese leadership's resolve to fight corruption.

In the past two weeks, Premier Wen Jiabao had twice dwelt on the necessity to take measure against commercial bribery. And the members of anti-bribery task forces had also been increased to cover 22 key government ministries.

Tackling commercial bribery, especially among government officials, is a major task the country must complete to build a clean and efficient government.

However, to effectively rein in commercial bribery, efforts should not only be made on the demand side. Domestic businesses should also be mobilized to help creating a level playing field for all by renouncing bribery.

To gain an unfair advantage or undue favours, commercial bribery was widely used in this country.

A recent central government document identified six sectors in which commercial bribery ran rampant: construction, land use, transaction of property rights, distribution of medicine, government procurement and development of land resources.

It's no surprise that commercial bribery has caused massive economic losses to the country.
