Trial of former
Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and his seven aides resumed in a Baghdad
court on Wednesday with absence of Saddam's chief attorney who walked out
during Tuesday's session.
The trial of Saddam Hussein and his
seven co-defendants has been adjourned until Wednesday after the
prosecution presented several documents to the court on
Tuesday.
Iraqis are worried that Sunday¡¯s
chaotic trial of Saddam Hussein might be the start of the collapse of the
Iraqi High Tribunal, which prosecutes the former Iraqi president and his
top aides.
A U.S.-based human rights group
said on Saturday that the Iraqi government and political powers are
interfering with the independence of the judges in charge of the trial of
Saddam Hussein.
Iraqi court has appointed Kurdish judge Rauf Rasheed
Abdul Rahman to replace Rizgar Muhammed Amin as the new chief judge in the
trial of Saddam and his seven co-defendants, a court official told Xinhua
on Monday.
Saddam and
seven others face an Iraqi court created to try the former leader and his
associates. The trial will start by examining the murder of 140 people in
Dujail in 1982. If convicted, the guilty will be sentenced to the
gallows.
