KABUL, March 1
(Xinhuanet) -- U.S. President George W. Bush arrived here Wednesday on a
surprise visit to Afghanistan.
This is the first visit of the U.S. leader to
post-Taliban Afghanistan since ouster of the hard-line Taliban regime in late
2001 and the first by an American President since the 1970s.
Accompanied by his wife Laura Bush, the U.S. leader,
during his short stay would exchange views on matters of mutual interests
particularly with Afghan President Hamid Karzai besides touring his troops'
headquarters in Bagram, 50 km north of capital Kabul.
The visit is part of President Bush's five-day tour
to South Asia, which will also take him to India and Pakistan.
More than 20,000-strong U.S.-led foreign troops have
been stationed in Afghanistan since 2001 to root out Taliban and al-Qaida
terrorist network militants in the war-torn country. Enditem |
