MOSCOW, Feb. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Chechen Prime Minister Sergei Abramov has submitted his resignation on health grounds, the Russian region's President Alu Alkhanov said on Tuesday.

    "I received a letter of resignation from Sergei Abramov today. We will consider it," Alkhanov told a news conference in Moscow.

    Abramov was injured in a car crash outside Moscow in November when his vehicle was in collision with a truck. Officials denied that the collision was an assassination attempt.

    Abramov's condition "does not allow him to fulfill his duties,"the Chechen president said. But he declined to say who could replace Abramov.

    Chechen First Deputy Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov has been serving as acting prime minister since Abramov's accident.

    Several months after Abramov's appointment as prime minister in March 2004, he survived an assassination attempt in which a roadside bomb tore through his motorcade as it passed through the Chechen capital.

    Russian government forces have been fighting separatist rebels for the past decade in Chechnya, during which time security forces and civilians have been targeted in numerous bomb attacks. Enditem
